Blake retired last spring after thirty-two years at the company, and our office spent a full week debating what to write in his card. Someone wanted to be funny. Someone wanted to get sentimental about how much they’d learned from him. Someone just wanted to sign their name and call it done. In the end, the card that made Blake tear up wasn’t the longest or the most polished, it was the one that mentioned a specific project he’d led fifteen years earlier that none of us even remembered until someone brought it up.
That’s the thing about retirement wishes: they land best when they acknowledge something real about the person’s career, not just the fact that they’re leaving it. Whether you’re writing for a coworker, a boss, a parent, or a close friend, these 200 retirement wishes and quotes will help you say something that actually means something to them.

Retirement Quotes
Sometimes a proven line says it better than an original one can. Here are some favorite retirement quotes worth writing in a card or reading aloud at a send-off.
- “The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off.” – Abe Lemons

- “Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.” – Louis Armstrong
- “I’m not retiring. I am graduating.” – Junior Seau
- “War and Peace must wait for the leisure of retirement, which never really comes.” – Anthony Burgess
- “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones that you did do.” – Mark Twain
- “To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization.” – Bertrand Russell
- “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Mahatma Gandhi
- “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot
- “The best is yet to be, the last of life for which the first was made.” – Robert Browning
- “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
- “Retirement: a working man’s compensation for enduring the misery of having a job.” – Elbert Hubbard
- “Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you’re aboard there’s nothing you can do.” – Golda Meir
- “You don’t stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing.” – George Bernard Shaw
- “If you put nothing away for retirement, I can tell you, to the last penny, how much you will have when you retire: nothing.” – John C. Bogle

- “My parents didn’t want to move to Florida, but they turned sixty, and that’s the law.” – Jerry Seinfeld

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best way to word a retirement wish for someone I don’t know well?
A short, warm message works well. A line from the Short and Sweet or Heartfelt sections above covers most situations without needing a personal story.
How long should a retirement message be?
There’s no required length. A sincere sentence or two often means more than a long paragraph, especially for coworkers or acquaintances.
Is it okay to make a joke in a retirement card?
Yes, if it fits the person’s personality. A funny line works well for someone with a playful sense of humor, especially paired with one sincere sentence.
Should I focus on their career or their future plans?
Both work well together. Acknowledging something specific about their career, then wishing them well in whatever comes next, tends to feel the most genuine.
What should I avoid saying in a retirement message?
Avoid jokes about age or being “put out to pasture,” and skip vague lines like “good luck” without acknowledging their years of work. Specificity always lands better than generic well wishes.
Final Thoughts
The best retirement wishes acknowledge something specific about the person’s career, not just the fact that they’re leaving it. A shared project, a lesson they taught you, or simply the impact they had on the people around them turns a generic “congratulations” into something worth keeping.
If you’re not sure what tone to strike, match it to your relationship. A close coworker or friend can handle humor and personal details. A boss or a more formal relationship calls for something warmer but more measured.
Whatever you write, keep it genuine. A short, specific message beats a long, generic one every time. If you’re the one retiring and want to thank the people who celebrated with you, see the full guide on retirement thank you notes.
