My neighbor Mrs. O’Brien came to this country from County Cork, Ireland, more than thirty years ago, and she has told me more than once that she has never taken a single day of it for granted. When you choose a country rather than simply being born into it, she says, you see it differently. You notice the things that people who grew up here sometimes stop seeing: the ease of moving freely, the right to say what you think, the particular kind of safety that comes from living in a place where the rule of law is the rule. She noticed all of it from her very first day here and she tells me she notices it still.

What she has also come to understand, after three decades of calling this country home, is that none of it happened by accident. Every freedom she enjoys as someone who chose to make this her home was paid for by someone else, often someone very young, who went somewhere very far away and gave something they could not get back. She has told me that the men and women who serve in the American military do not do it for recognition. Most of them, she says, did it for the person next to them, or for something they believed in, or simply because it was the right thing to do. That kind of quiet, steady courage deserves more than a day, she always reminds me.

But a day is what we have, and on the Fourth of July especially, it matters to say something. These one hundred patriotic messages for soldiers and veterans are here to help you find the words to honor the people who made every freedom we celebrate today possible.

Final Thoughts

The Fourth of July is a celebration of freedom, but freedom is never an abstraction. It is always personal. It was bought by specific people who made specific sacrifices in specific places, and it is maintained every day by men and women who continue to do the same. Today is a good day to say thank you in the most direct and personal way you can.

If there is a veteran in your life, reach out. If there is an active duty soldier far from home, send a message. If you do not know anyone personally, find a way to honor the service of those who gave so much so that you could have so much. The fireworks tonight are beautiful. The reason we get to watch them is more beautiful still.
