The Psalms have become my refuge this year. When words fail me, when my own prayers feel inadequate, I turn to these ancient songs and find that someone thousands of years ago felt exactly what I’m feeling now. David knew what it was like to run for his life. The sons of Korah understood feeling abandoned. Asaph wrestled with why the wicked prosper while the righteous suffer.
I’m a wife, a mother to two boys, and most days I’m just trying to keep everyone fed, loved, and relatively clean. But this year has tested me in ways I didn’t expect. Not catastrophic things, just the accumulated weight of daily challenges. Financial stress that keeps me up at night. Worries about my older son at school. The exhaustion of caring for a baby while trying to be present for everyone else.
Three years ago, I lost my father. He loved the Psalms. His Bible was worn thin at the Psalter, pages soft from decades of turning. After he passed, my mother gave me that Bible. Sometimes I open it just to see which Psalms he underlined, which verses he returned to again and again.
The Psalms don’t sugarcoat suffering. They don’t offer trite answers or demand we pretend everything is fine. They permit us to bring our honest, messy emotions to God. Fear, anger, doubt, despair, all of it. And then they lift our eyes to remember who God is in the midst of it all.

I read through these Psalms this morning before the house woke up. My father’s Bible was open on the table, his underlines still visible in fading ink. I wonder which of these verses carried him through his hard days. Which ones he returned to when he was scared or tired or doubting.
The Psalms don’t promise that life will be easy. They promise that God will be present. They don’t guarantee we’ll avoid suffering. They assure us we won’t suffer alone.
This year has taught me that faith isn’t the absence of fear; it’s trusting God in spite of the fear. The Psalms give me language for that tension. They let me cry out honestly while still holding onto hope.
My older son saw me reading this morning and asked what I was doing. I told him I was reading the same prayers his grandpa used to read. “Did they help Grandpa?” he asked. I smiled. “Yes, buddy. They helped him remember God was always there.”
“Do they help you?” he pressed.
I nodded. “Every single day.”
These fifty Psalms aren’t magic formulas. They’re reminders. They’re prayers when we don’t have our own words. They’re anchors when everything feels unsteady. They’re proof that people have been crying out to God for thousands of years, and He’s been faithful every single time.
