My older son started second grade this year, proud as anything with his new backpack. His little brother, barely a year old, has no idea what school even is yet, though he did try to eat one of the new notebooks. I still tucked a little note into my older boy’s lunch box that first day, just a few lines about how proud I was of him and how excited I was for his second grade year. He kept that note in his backpack for a month.

That’s the thing about back-to-school wishes: a few genuine words at the start of a new year can matter more than you’d expect, whether you’re writing them for your own child, a niece heading off to college, or the teacher who’s about to spend a year with your kid. These 250 back-to-school messages and wishes cover every relationship and every grade, from the first day of kindergarten to the first day of a new semester.

Back to School Quotes

Sometimes a proven line says it better than an original one can. Here are some favorite quotes about learning and new beginnings worth writing in a card.

  • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
  • “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” – B.B. King
  • “Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them.” – Rita Pierson
  • “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” – Aristotle
  • “Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.” – John Dewey
  • “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin
  • “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” – Sydney J. Harris
  • “Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.” – Anthony J. D’Angelo
  • “Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time.” – Chinese Proverb
  • “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to word a back-to-school wish for a child?
Keep it warm, short, and encouraging. A line from the Kids or Short and Sweet sections above works well for a lunchbox note or a first-day card.

Should a back-to-school message be different for a teacher versus a student?
Yes. Messages for teachers tend to focus on appreciation and encouragement, while messages for students focus more on confidence and excitement for the year ahead.

Is it okay to be funny in a back-to-school card?
Yes, especially for older kids and teens who appreciate humor. Pair a funny line with something genuine so it doesn’t feel like just a joke.

What should I write in a first-day-of-school lunchbox note?
Keep it short and encouraging, a sentence or two is plenty. A simple “I’m proud of you” or “You’ve got this” means more than a long note a young reader might not have time to finish.

Final Thoughts

The best back-to-school wishes are short, warm, and specific to who you’re writing them for. A note in a lunchbox should be brief and encouraging, while a card for a teacher can go a little deeper into genuine appreciation.

If you’re looking for something with more structure, the full guides cover specific formats and occasions: back to school quotes and back to school captions for social media, back to school Bible verses and back to school prayers for faith-based messages, back to school poems for something more creative, and back to school party ideas if you’re celebrating the new year with more than just a card. There’s also the original back to school messages post, covering students, teachers, and parents in one shorter list.

And when the year wraps up, the last day of school wishes make a nice bookend to whatever you write today.
