Every August, my Instagram feed turns into one long hallway of first-day-of-school photos. Kids on porch steps holding hand-drawn signs with their grade written in marker, teenagers rolling their eyes at the camera while their mom insists on “just one more,” teachers posing in front of freshly decorated bulletin boards at 7 a.m. before a single student has walked in. I love the whole ritual of it, and I have also, more than once, sat there for ten minutes trying to think of a caption that isn’t just “back to school!” with three exclamation points.
So I put together the caption bank I actually keep saved in my notes app this time of year, organized by who or what the photo is actually about. Steal whatever fits.

Where to Use These
Most of these work exactly as written under a photo, but a few small tweaks make them feel more personal. Swap in the actual grade, teacher’s name, or school mascot where it fits naturally, since specific details almost always read better than a generic line, even a good one. For a group caption with siblings or classmates, switch singular pronouns to plural (“you’ve got this” becomes “you’ve got this, both of you”). If you’re captioning a video instead of a photo, the funnier and shorter lines from the list above tend to hold up best, since a long emotional caption can feel mismatched against fifteen seconds of chaos at the bus stop.
Final Thoughts
The best caption is almost never the cleverest one. It’s the one that actually matches how you felt standing there with your phone out, whether that’s giddy, weepy, relieved, or some combination you can’t fully untangle at 7:45 in the morning. If none of these feel exactly right, try writing the caption the way you’d text it to your best friend right after the photo, typos and all, and then just clean it up a little. That version usually beats anything pulled from a list, this one included.
And if you’re the parent standing there wondering whether it’s normal to cry a little over a backpack photo, it is. I do it every single year, and by the second week of September I can barely remember what the fuss was about. Take the picture anyway.
I still have the very first back-to-school photo I ever took of my son, kindergarten, missing one front tooth, backpack nearly as big as he was. The caption underneath it, typed at 7:52 a.m. with one hand while I held my coffee in the other, just says “here we go.” Six years later, that’s still the truest caption I’ve ever written for this particular kind of morning.
